El Niño/Southern Oscillation, Streamflow and Water Resources Management in Australia

Back to example

September to November inflows into the Wyangala Dam, sorted by values of the SOI in the preceding June to August period. The box-and-whisker plots show how the inflows are distributed. The dots represent the mean, or average, of the inflows. For example, the mean inflow during La Niña events (SOI greater than +5) is almost 400GL, whereas the mean during El Niño events (SOI less than -5) is only about 150GL. The "whiskers" represent the percentage of values lying below the whisker. For example, when the SOI is less than -5 (El Niño condtions), 90% of inflows were less than 500GL.
