Our Partners

Partnerships are vital to IRI’s research, and they are at the heart of our engagement in practical problems, capacity building and outreach.

We work in partnership with governments and organizations to solve real development and humanitarian problems. Partners give us the context for our work. They help us target our research and products so that they are useful and usable. Partners participate throughout the process – from identifying the problem, to designing implementing and evaluating the project. With them we are able to explore, pilot, scale and sustain improvements in climate risk management and climate services.

We work with a broad range of science partners as well. National meteorological services, data and modeling centers, and several space agencies contribute expertise, technology, and guidance. We collaborate with research institutes in agriculture, water, economics, and health. Through these partnerships we are also better able to coordinate research agendas across institutions – helping to bridge between disciplines and helping to share knowledge and develop a stronger network. These interdisciplinary collaborations are generating some of the most exciting innovations in risk management and resilience.

“The work USAID is funding at IRI has enabled us this year to expand our index insurance to 37,000 additional farmers in Rwanda. They are very vulnerable to drought and have no access to traditional agriculture insurance products. Our index insurance contracts will allow these smallholder farmers to withstand the impacts of bad years, and to risk making productive investments.”

-Fritz Brugger, Head of Agricultural Support Services, Syngenta Foundation

“The IFRC Maproom has been a huge asset to the Red Cross, not only at Geneva level where the disaster management department checks the near-term forecasts on a daily basis, but also in the field where people have been receiving seasonal forecast information and taking action to combat food insecurity, health, and flood risks.”

-Maarten van Aalst, Director, Red Cross/Red Crescent Climate Centre
