The ENSO has a significant impact in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and there is a good relationship between the stronger ENSO events and rainfall extremes in PNG. The impact is particularly marked in the highlands (1200-2800 m above sea level) where villagers obtain most of their energy food from a single crop, sweet potato. The most dramatic effect is frosts, which are most severe at above 2200 m altitude. A single frost does not have a large impact on food production, but a series of frosts destroys sweet potato and other crops.
