June Climate Briefing: La Niña Odds Increasing

By mid-June, the sea surface temperatures had decreased to borderline La Niña levels, while some atmospheric indictors show La Niña-leaning conditions and a few show neutral conditions. A new set of model runs predicts cool-neutral or weak La Niña conditions are most likely from late summer through early winter, with a 45-50% probability for either cool-neutral or weak La Niña for the July-September through September-November seasons. Probabilities for neutral begin exceeding those for La Niña by late winter 2020-21. This outlook calls for similar chances for La Niña from late summer to early winter as the official ENSO forecast issued June 11, which used both models and human judgement.

To predict ENSO conditions, computers model the SSTs in the Niño3.4 region over the next several months. The plume graph below shows the outputs of these models, some of which use equations based on our physical understanding of the system (called dynamical models), and some of which use statistics, based on the long record of historical observations.
The La Niña odds are lower in the official probabilistic forecast issued by the U.S. Climate Prediction Center (CPC) and IRI in early June than in the mid-month IRI/CPC forecast. The earlier forecast uses human judgement in addition to model output, while the mid-month forecast relies solely on model output.
