Launch of the Global Nutrition Report

Climate change is complicating global efforts to end malnutrition. Even small and seasonal fluctuations in climate can have big impacts on food availability. The Global Nutrition Report is the first comprehensive summary and scorecard on both global and country level progress on all forms of nutrition for 193 countries. The 2015 edition will build and reflect on new opportunities, actions, progress, accountability, and data for nutrition, with the aim to build greater commitment to improved nutrition in all countries. IRI’s Madeleine Thomson was the lead author of the chapter about the role of climate on nutrition.

Climate, Data and Journalism

This event, organized jointly by the Brown Institute for Media Innovation and the International Research Institute for Climate and Society, will talk through challenges and opportunities associated with data-informed story telling — identifying  promising sources of information, innovative visualization methods, and avenues for the climate and journalism communities to come together to use narrative to raise awareness of and access to climate information. The workshop will also include specific discussion around challenges and opportunities in accessing and using data; public engagement in data production and use; and modes of communicating climate stories in ways that are compelling and spur action.

UN General Assembly High-Level Conference
The Role of Public-Private Partnerships

The process leading up to the UN Summit to adopt the Post-2015 Development Agenda has seen an unprecedented involvement by private sector and civil society. The UNGA conference provides a platform for presenting best practices by these stakeholders and exploring mechanisms for achieving the proposed 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 related targets. One of the widely discussed means of implementation has been the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Collaboration among national government, private sector, civil society organizations representing youth, women, indigenous people, disabled persons and other groups has been seen as the most effective way to achieve the SDGs.

IRI’s Lisa Goddard will be speaking on a panel which will discuss issues related to the next stages of the development agenda, including indicators, data collection, monitoring and review framework and further collaboration among stakeholders.

The Role of Public-Private-People-Partnerships in Building the Resilience of Vulnerable Communities
New Thinking for Transformational Change

This high-level policy discussion, hosted by the World Food Programme and Oxfam America, focuses on the impact of public-private-people-partnerships in empowering vulnerable women and men to manage risk and thrive in the face of climate shocks. The event will highlight the positive steps already being taken to address the impact of climate change as well as the need for climate finance and action to scale-up successes.

The Rural Resilience Initiative (R4) – launched by Oxfam America and the World Food Programme in 2011 with support from the reinsurance company Swiss Re- represents a dynamic public-private-people-partnership in action. The International Research Institute for Climate and Society’s Financial Instruments Sector Team has been an integral part of R4 since the program’s inception.  Nearly 5 years after the initial launch, R4 partners will reflect on successes, challenges, opportunities and lessons learned in order to help inform the growing needs to generate large-scale finance and action to build resilience against climate change.
