The map above has been generated from the 9-month WASP Index (Weighted Anomaly Standardized Precipitation) for the period September 2003 to May 2004. Green-shaded regions indicate unusually wet conditions over this 9-month period, while brown areas have been unusually dry. Both indicate areas with increased sensitivity to future climate and societal stresses.

3 Month Precipitation Persistence

Areas colored in brown (green) indicate regions where monthly rainfall was in the bottom (top) 20% of the (1979-present) observational record with lighter (darker) shading indicating where this condition was met for two (three) of the past three months. Contours are climatological precipitation for the period in cm per month.

Areas colored in blue (red) indicate regions where monthly temperature was in the bottom (top) 20% of the observational record with lighter (darker) shading indicating where this condition was met for two (three) of the past three months.
