February 26: Adapting to a Changing Climate,
Managing Our Cities & Food Supply
IRI Director Lisa Goddard will be on a panel exploring how science is enhancing society's ability to understand and manage the impacts of climate variability and change, including extreme weather events such as Hurricane Sandy. Columbia University's Adam Sobel and Sergej Mahnovski from the New York City Mayor's Office will round out the panel. The Earth Institute's Steven Cohen will moderate the event, which is free and open to the public. Register for event.

New Episodes of La Niña Discovered!
With help from the IRI, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center has reworked what counts as the "average temperature" for detecting the warm and cool conditions in the Pacific Ocean that define El Niño and La Niña. Applying the new strategy to data from the last decade uncovered two La Niña events that had been hidden by climate change.

IRI and NASA/SERVIR Helping African Farmers

Pasted Graphic 2
The IRI and NASA/SERVIR recently held a workshop in Tanzania to explore ways in which NASA satellite data could be used in the design of index insurance products across Africa. IRI and partners such as USAID, Oxfam and Swiss Re have shown index insurance to be an affordable way for smallholder farmers in Ethiopia, Malawi and other countries to protect against drought-related crop losses. Cat Puns, Scientists and Social Media
Social media plus scientists plus Chemistry Cat puns is a great formula for a talk, right? That's the premise behind a recent talk given by IRI's Brian Kahn and Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory's Rebecca Fowler to kick off the Winter/Spring Earth Science Colloquium Series at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory. They argue that Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and other social platforms can be effective ways to talk about their work. Get their Prezi presentation here.

Obama on Climate Change
Lisa Goddard, James Hansen and other climate experts across the Earth Institute weigh in on what President Obama can and should do about climate change in his second term in this post on the State of the Planet blog.

Scenario development for estimating potential climate change impacts on crop production in the North China Plain. This study uses a novel mix of statistical methods to derive daily rainfall, temperature and solar radiation data from existing longterm climate change model outputs. These data can then potentially be used by crop models to generate more accurate crop-production scenarios for one of the most important agricultural zones in China. International Journal of Climatology. Chao Chen, Arthur M. Greene, Andrew W. Robertson, Walter E. Baethgen and Derek Eamus.
