Achieving Water Security: Innovative Tools for System Resilience

Research Interests

The need for services provided by water is growing with population and economic development in many parts of the world.  Increasing the supply of water is often not economically, socially or environmentally justifiable, especially in view of the existing inefficiencies in water use.  An alternative to supply augmentation is providing more water services per water withdrawn.  This requires aligning the economic incentives of water use with a society’s ideals, for example, equitable economic growth and environmental sustainability.  In my research I study the design and application of innovative water management methods drawn from economic modeling and advances in the characterization and prediction of hydroclimate.  My work integrates statistical hydrology, systems analysis and economic theory to foster the design of water systems that better satisfy society’s competing priorities.
