Selangor: Outbreak of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease
--------------------------------------------------
SHAH ALAM: Over the past 2 weeks, 35 children, aged between 3 and 5
years, have been struck down by hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD)
in Selangor. However, only 4 have been [admitted to hospital],
whereas the others were given outpatient treatment.
The HFMD cases were detected despite precautionary measures taken by
the state government since last year when 195 cases were reported.
Selangor Health Committee chairman Datuk Tang See Hang said all the
relevant health authorities have been instructed to report HFMD cases
to the state Health Department, and government hospitals have been
advised to be on the alert for such cases and to conduct a thorough
check-up on patients referred to them. "Parents need not be alarmed
over the outbreak but they must ensure that their children be
referred for a thorough health screening," he said.
Tang said the [virus responsible for the outbreak] is Coxsackie virus
A16, [which is associated with] a mild form of the disease where
patients recover without medical treatment within 7 to 10 days. "We
have not [detected cases of Enterovirus 71 (EV71) infection], which
[may] cause inflammation of the brain membrane and brain inflammation
which may be fatal," he said. [Currently, EV71 is associated with an
outbreak of HFMD in Taiwan. See reference above. - Mod.CP]
So far this year, 35 cases were reported in January, 37 in February,
and 35 in March. "There were no complication in any of the cases but
our Health Department is monitoring the situation," he said. Tang
said private clinics are required to refer such cases to the
hospitals as clinical diagnosis alone is not sufficient to verify the
ailment. He said the disease is spread mainly through food and water
that is contaminated with faeces, or [via air-borne] secretions
produced from the mouth or nose of patients. The symptoms of HFMD
include fever, sore throat, and sometimes blistering rashes on the
hands and feet.

Children Admitted to Hospital with Suspected Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
MALACCA: So far 10 children below the age of 7 have come down with
suspected hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) in the state in the
past week. State Human Resource, Health and Consumer Affairs
Committee chairman Datuk Seah Kwi Tong said they were admitted to
private and government hospitals for 1 to 2 days for observation
before being discharged. He said the situation here was not alarming
and the state was closely monitoring every suspected case.
It was reported yesterday that 35 children, aged between 3 and 5
years, had also been struck by HFMD in Selangor over the past 2
weeks. [see part 1 above.]
Attributing the current outbreak to the prolonged dry spell, Seah
said none of the reported cases was very serious.
